چکیده

Up-to-date information of forest resources is required at a variety of scales in order to support forest management practices ranging from strategic to operational levels. The rate of change in Scottish forests is significant and may occur over short periods due to active silvicultural management and the impact of natural disturbances (e.g. windthrow). Field-based sample inventories collect information on the location, condition and extent of current forest resources. However, Bottai et al. (2002) note that in many cases the sampling intensities for operational inventories are too coarse and cannot provide accurate representations of the forest resources.

Forest Inventory by Means of Satellite Remote Sensing and Laser Scanning

In this paper forest inventory methods which are based on satellite remote sensing and laser-scanner data will be introduced. It will be demonstrated in how far conventional terrestrial inventories at a scale of 1 : 10.000 to 1 : 25.000 can benefit from the synergetic use of both sensor types. The forest inventory parameters to be investigated are: tree height, timber volume, tree species, tree...

Supporting large-area, sample-based forest inventories with very high spatial resolution satellite imagery

Information needs associated with forest management and reporting requires data with a steadily increasing level of detail and temporal frequency. Remote sensing satellites commonly used for forest monitoring (eg, Landsat, SPOT) typically collect imagery with suffi cient temporal frequency, but lack the requisite spatial and categorical detail for some forest inventory information needs. Aerial...

Investigating New Advances in Forest Species Classification

Detailed forest classification provides critical information for forest managers. The potential for species level classification from remotely sensed data has been challenging in the past because of limitations of both available image data and traditional classification techniques. Such limitations may be reduced by the increased availability of higher spatial resolution imagery as well as deta...

Validation of Volunteered Geographic Information Landuse Change Using Satellite Imagery

Land use change monitoring is one of the main concerns of managers and urban planners due to human activities and unbalanced physical development in urban areas. In this paper, a combination of remote sensing data and volunteered geographic information was used to assess the quality of volunteered geographic information on land use and land cover changes monitoring. For this purpose, the ORBVIE...

Estimation of local forest attributes, utilizing two-phase sampling and auxiliary data

This thesis examines the feasibility of a forest inventory method based on two-phase sampling in estimating forest attributes at the stand or substand levels for forest management purposes. The method is based on multi-source forest inventory combining auxiliary data consisting of remote sensing imagery or other geographic information and field measurements. Auxiliary data are utilized as first...
